No WSVG? I Don't Even Want to Breathe Anymore

I don't want air in my lungs. I don't want fucking air. Don't even talk about WoW to me. That game is fucking dead. I'm going to go listen to music and masturbate to my Ben Gibbard poster. After that, who knows, with WSVG gone, who fucking knows. I think I'll clean out my closet, tell my mom I'm sorry (that I won't be bringing home those WSVG winnings), and maybe clean out my closet one more time.

Yeah, I'm a fucking douchebag, but everyone is so fucking Owen Wilson about this whole thing, and while I'm extremely disappointed, was this shocking? The WSVG events looked incredible to attend, and I was hugely jealous that I couldn't go because they seemed fun to be at -- not so much with the watching. And, yeah, I'm not eulogizing WSVG as the "best thing to happen to WoW" because while the twenty minutes of arena and 7 minutes of heaven that were Freddy Wong were great to watch, hours of dead time and those stupid IBM loser dancing commericals can kiss my ass goodbye. (the same teeth and tongues rules apply as previously discussed)

The demise of the WSVG is essentially the exact same as Marissa's death -- are you really going to blame Ryan (WoW), or can you just accept that the responsibility lies on Kevin alone? Sure, WoW wasn't there for WSVG -- there were some hard times for WSVG and WoW was off doing other things, but that doesn't make WoW responsible. He was just there and it happened too fast and there was nothing he could fucking do.

It should be an interesting few days. Lots of eFamous people will quit the game for other eSports to pursue their eCareers and despite the fact that I'm being a huge faggot about this, it is pretty brutal to the people who were in position to get paid a fair chunk of money or who were instrumental in running the events. Weirdly, this is my way of saying that I'm sorry for everyone hurt by the failure of WSVG...and that's about all the seriousness I have left in me.

I'll really miss that girl who announced the Louisville event where Freddy Wong cocked out with his rock out. I loved listening to her mental math, "An 8, a 7, and another 8. That's great. That puts you at 19, sorry I mean 22 for the round and in third place." I could listen to her add numbers for hours -- that is what WSVG should do instead. I'll be your VC if you ever want to do a "Cute Girls Trying to Add" show.

Just remember if you're feeling sad or lonely about this WSVG thing, I'll be there for you. Blogging. Defending. There.

Hey kid, need any help?

What have you heard about season 2 5v5 tournament?

Raddy said...

I've heard nothing really. Lots of people are saying it isn't happening, but I've heard nothing official.

I don't really have an opinion on a season 2 tournament, I expect they will still do something, but who knows if they'll do the whole qualifiers and regionals nonsense and do a physical tournament somewhere. Intuitively, it doesn't seem likely.

I'm not sure what Blizzard is planning for WoW PvP -- I expect that they'll have to come out and say something with all the incoming drama.

A lot of people are conspiracy theory-ing it up as they want to gimp WoW PvP to make SC2 a more attractive product, the goal being that players will do both, but this looks like nonsense to me.

I don't really know anything at all about the economics of gaming, but intuitively, WoW is basically the idea sales model. Predictable and constant cash flow that pays for the development of further content that's only real danger is a rapid decline in playerbase. SC2 on the other hand is basically a situation where there is no incentive to retain players and it is almost to the point of it being Blizzard's fiscal interest for you to not play SC2 after you've purchased the game.

I see SC2 as pretty much unrelated to WoW in the big picture as far as how Blizzard continues to develop PvP in WoW. If PvP disappeared from WoW, I think they'd lose their whole audience to another MMO -- I can't really picture how "I PvE in WoW and PvP in SC2" could realistically every work out.

I think that this current situation with WSVG, the current lull in content in WoW, and general game staleness will push people to look for other games to play. The issue is that there is nothing on the horizon that is going to be the "next WoW."

The thing with WoW that a lot of people will miss in other games is that WoW is big. It's mass culture. It's got a larger audience than most popular TV shows. (Well not stuff likes Heroes lol) It's hard for me to picture going to a game where there's a total audience of 200-300k now. The other issue is that WoW PvP is somewhat transcendent of genre -- you have people into WoW PvP that came from all sorts of genre games previously.

Generally RTS players, FPS players, fighter players and RPG players don't mix but in WoW they do -- I'm unsure what that means really, but I always liked how GameOver included hardcore RTS players, competitive FPS players, and well, me, whose played most extensively fighters. At this point, I can't really see myself going back to fighters unless I was to relocate to Japan or Korea (not that unlikely), so I'm not in a huge rush to leave WoW to return to my "roots."

I believe that the future of all this stuff is in games than are highly social, transcend genres and are pop culture successful. If you really want to see gaming become anything like competitive sports, this seems like the way it would happen. Stuff like Huxley sounds like it has huge potential to me, and while I don't think Huxley in particular will be hugely successful due to it being generally unheard of in the states, it's one of the few titles floating around that sounds particularly appealing.

Hmn, I meant to just answer your question teki but I ended up rambling. Markets are slow tonight zzz.

The solution is obviously to return to Gunbound, the only game you were ever any good at.

I feel fucking dirty. My friends and I went to Dallas and we got 9th, getting knocked out by EG. After bubbling like that, we were excited to go to LA with a bunch more experience, 6-7+ 2300 3v3 teams worth of practice, and a sex appeal that approaches 'untouchable' status.

Now I'm in that same place as you from a few days ago, except instead of using sandpaper, I'm rubbing steel wool all over my body while screaming, "IT PUTS THE LOTION ON ITS SKIN." The police will probably break down the door soon, so I should go.

I'm the fucking wsvg equivalent of this guy: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kHmvkRoEowc

It's kinda funny...
I always thought of the WSVG as a failure and a sick joke, a mockery of what WoW pvp events should actually be.

But now that it's gone...
I'm actually depressed.

I'm gonna go try the peaches technique to get myself a woman tonight.

Yes. I think I need to perma-link that post so it doesn't get lost.

You're doing a crappy job of keeping me entertained by the way. I must have read every blog post in the last month of GameRiot -- that's not a good thing.

The funny part is all these people threatening to quit WoW because a little 3v3 tournament is no longer there. WoW has never proved itself in the esports world aside from having a huge player base and the majority of those players couldn't careless about the esports side of WoW (competitive arena).

WoW has been the laughing stock of long time esports followers and competitors ever since the debut of WSVG having a 3v3.

People tagging WoW as "dead" because a LAN league comes to a halt is pure comedy. Ming style drama at best. Major esports titles started with community ran tournaments, leagues. WoW gets a lucky shot without having any previous competitive foundation. This MMO is far from dead. If the community is that hard up on it start making leagues and tournaments. Show that WoW deserves to be out there.

The WSVG coming to a halt did nothing to WoW. Just a minor speed bump. If anyone wants to feel bad about anything, feel bad for Quake 1v1 officially being dead. The original and founding platform of esports.

I really hope the idiot PvPers quit the game now. It seems all the epeen efamous eflexing emoney idiots were more damaging to the game than anything else. They didn't care about balance or anything else. They cared about having a game done in such a way that they could appear elite in hopes of earning money. good riddance to every idiot that owns a blog on Gameriot. Go to Fury or whatever else, just as long as you finally shut your hole about how bad the game is.

Anonymous said...

Quoted from Dahis on Gameriot:
"Since Gameriot and the WSVG are effectively run by the same company, we may see some changes here as well. It's hard to say right now whether those changes will be for the better (do to the funds freed up by the WSVG cancelling) or for the worst (if interest declines), but hopefully Ming and I will both continue to be compensated for our writing"

As you can see, the only thing that matters is him getting payed. As if writing three blogs a week is really that tough that it deserves compensation.

"As you can see, the only thing that matters is him getting payed. As if writing three blogs a week is really that tough that it deserves compensation."

Yeah, because I did 7/week for four months with no compensation. There's nothing wrong with wanting to get paid, but it doesn't mean that's all that matters.

Anonymous said...

I play WOW a lot and write about it. Thus I should get paid.!

No worries either way if you quit the game or quit blogging. There are a few people in the 9 million that play that will fill in your spot in both places.

But I do I love how people feel that some poorly run company that tried to ride the coat tails of other peoples accomplishments will somehow impact Blizzard or their consumer base. Gameriot's parent company stole ideas from a dozen other types of company and marketing schemes and rushed them to market before they were mature or had financial backing.

But for those kids claiming this: Over inflated sense of self worth? Huge Ego? Vanity? Seems so. Not just you Dahis, but pretty much anyone on that site so this isn't a "fuck you dahis" post by any means.

Vontre said...

I am so very shocked by this (sarcasm).

Mmmm PvE is delicious.

Here, it's not like arena and pvp aren't fun or anything, I like the combat system and it's enjoyable. But what I've said from the beginning, MMOs are not a proper place for serious competition, that's just where this dream is always going to end. Balancing 9 classes that can be combined any number of ways in 5 slots that all have extremely unique and varied abilities is such an impossible task it's foolhardy.

Now lack of balance isn't an issue by itself. Lots of popular fighting games don't have perfectly balanced characters, and they still have successful communities and tournaments and such. What WoW is utterly lacking is symmetry.

Vontre said...

I was gonna write more but I got bored and decided to do something else. I leave you all in mid-thought mwahahaha. I doubt anyone cares. =D

Dahis said...

I don't know why you're so bothered by this. I started writing because people asked me to. I started getting paid because it was a bonus for something I was already doing and working with Ming freed up my schedule a bit. Ego doesn't come into it, I don't expect everyone to care about what I have to say, but enough people appreciate it that it's worth doing.

Your assumptions are pretty much the opposite of why a lot of people write on Gameriot.

Dahis said...

P.S. Why do you think I link to Radikalnoise so much? It's not about the venue or about the monetary compensation, it's about people writing quality informative or humorous works and other people being able to enjoy them.

I disagree.

Because then you'd be like Grant Hill of the 1997 team, the Front-man, when you really want to be the Stockton to the WoW communities Malone, you know?

As for the whole gameriot thing, I had really considered strongly writing for GR too. I like some of the site's features such as the ability to better track comments and browse from someone's comments to other posts they read. I'm certainly not anti-GR or anything -- I read Ming's and Dahis' blog religiously; they've been two of my favorite people I've met playing WoW (well Ming is a freak but he's funny), so don't think I have some grief with the GR guys.

I LOVE AND MISS ALL YOU PEOPLE FROM BB. I WILL PAY FOR YOUR WHOLE GUILD TO TRANSFER HERE AND CORPSE CAMP ME BECAUSE I AM VERY LONELY.

I probably emo'd out the most of everyone who posted about it, mainly cuz I play this game only for competition. tell me to go play an fps or rts if I want to play a game like wow competitively and you'll hear 'been there done that' a dozen times, I played WoW for PvP but now PvP turned competitive - without much reason to compete, knowing my place in the scheme of things, I feel besides the few future tournaments left in WoW that its time for another generation of epeen heroes to take place of the present ones.

I feel this post is targetted at players like myself, but if anyone knows I'm one of the founders of bg9 and I hyped it up as much as anyone(probably more, I was the public defender for the last year on worldofming for bg9 blogs lolol) so there!
