MLG Weekend Thoughts

Wow. Intense as shit. By far, the most fun live WoW event. All of the best US players, some sweet Euros with hot accents, and commentators who actually know the game. The time between matches leaving something to be desired still, but shooting the shit on vent/irc between rounds and the corresponding trashtalk kept shit from getting too boring.

Commentating:

Word for plugging RN. Love. LOL. Highpoint was "YEAH THAT JUST HAPPENED."

I think you should drag more players up to chat during the downtime. Talk about strats/comps/issues whatever with some of the players at the event. The canned interviews were okay, but I didn't really feel some of them.

Random Stuff:

Hafu hugged Azael. Oh my geese. Why did Ming not cover this important moment in the tournament? Slacking imo.

Warrior/Rogue vs Druid/Rogue - Zyz saps Druid out of drinking, opens, vanishes and saps the rogue coming to assist the Druid. He then solos the druid after the druid gets away and tries to drink a second time. The most clutch moment in the whole livestream. Zyzski ftw.

MVP - A lot of people are talking about who was the MVP of the tournament. I'm going to say Hydra even though his team didn't win. He was dominant in every game he played. Lots of people played well no doubt, but Hydra stood out tremendously. Love for Bregor (Azael) for ripping with 3 classes and representing cleave like no other warrior could. (hi2u sunder armor)

GGE's Rogue/Rogue/Druid - Cleaving your way to glory...almost. The matches against DGFG were intense and, despite the RRD hate, it's definitely not as much a counter to RMP as something like RPD. They also provided for some of the most crazy matches to watch -- Zyz running for his life and amazingly surviving many times. ^^

Lack of Sunder Armor - As Nikzi (Matt) said, "I like how the warlock[Azael] was the only one to sunder." When Pandemic played Nihilum, it definitely seemed they were doing fine simply by training Hydra, but they'd randomly swap off and, as soon as they did, he'd be back on the offensive raping Douja's mana pool. It's kind of nub, but continuing the train would have at least won them one or two of those games.

DGFG's Retarded Burst - I've played RMP since season one with a LOT of different good players. I still don't get the burst Duelists puts out sometimes. Crazy. ^^ Honestly, I'm sort of a hater on the way they play, since they sometimes seem to play with an extreme lack of control, but...damn. Rank 1 frost armor reapplication though yo!

Spoh is dead sexy and surprisingly articulate.

Inactive is a thug. Yep, in my white tee. Yep, in my white tee. His play was pretty sick in the matches they showed. (hi2u sap macro omg u cheats)

Vhell says 'definitely' a lot.

Hydra manaburning warlocks.

SK's terrible decision making. Seriously, they could have just cleaved their way to victory. Trying to cast <>Azael's rage exploiting. Everyone else did it, but everyone loves to hate Bregor. He was also the only one snake enough to join games with 20 seconds left to maximize his rage. Realistically, this made zero difference in any game, but snakery is snakery. ^^

I told you baddies that the top 4 would have both FD teams and Nihilum. I thought SK would be the fourth, but it was a different cleave team. Sue me.

It was awesome. I wish I was there!!

Oh, and: It would be awesome if every player's perspective was recorded in the last few rounds and was available for download. I'm sure lots of players would like to see heads-up-views of the finals from players of their choosing.

Lastly -- Zyz: Owning Since Level Four

zyz was really inconsistent...great in that 2v2, great when getting trained by those horrible rogues (rofl@zyz kiting two rogues) but pretty bad at other parts...still, he kept it together when it counted

nihilum and duelists were the best teams there, hands down

Props to the announcers...really good job. I think they pretty much made the event what it was for those viewing the stream. The interaction between the announcers and those posting on GotFrag's forums + IRC definetly made the down time better also.

Nihilum seemed to have lost it a bit in those last games. From watching them though I thought they were easily the best team overall. I also really enjoyed their comp and Hydra playing amazingly well.

I didn't get to see any of the Duelist matches sadly and they were the team I wanted to watch the most.

Closing thoughts; great tournament. Very enjoyable to watch. The interviews were ok but generally I closed my browser and checked back in once I figured the matches were starting again. Hosting was very good though during the matches.

Ugh cant believe I missed the games this morning. WHERE can I find them now??

without intending to lower greatness of hydra the god of priests, manaburning locks while applying same pressure with damage/cc is not hot news here in yurop~ (sup 2v2 ud pr-rog racialdot/swp/pi/burnspam/dispelspam/rog vs loq-dru)

the only 'weird' thingy was doing deadly switches with their comp but then again considering the ability of hydra being far ahead in mana all the time, it DEFINITELY leaves good room for those

anyway, it was worth watching (unlike all past tournz) for both matches and drama, ALTHOUGH THERE'S SOMETHING THAT PEOPLE DEMAND FOR FUTURE TOURNAMENTS:

...

...

come on people

"THE STORMKING HAS ENTERED THE TOURNAMENT."
ming wouldn't hurt either, but srsly.

Hope more international teams go next stop, was entertaining though.

was great tournament, had more fun than watching the old cs cpl finals ages ago. Especially nihilums games were awesome and i definetly agree with Raddys mvp choice.

The best part was watching Avatar's nerdrage fingernail picking/biting. Soooooo good to see that idiot who hacked, exploited and /sitspammed his way to Gladiator get destroyed by skilled players. Also, how is it possible for an AZN to look so damn white? That kid needs to get some damn sun.

FD: They didn't use any odd specs, they won with pvp gear in the final matches and Azazel stopped using the rage exploit in the final round. They outplayed everyone but they were not perfect. Azazel plays a warrior better than he does a warlock and yesterday he waited 4 seconds before using his trinket on a fear when he played a rogue and during that time his druid died. Zyz needs to be quicker with changing targets but his sap/vanish/cc in that 2v2 at the end won that match for them.

One thing to remember is that we're watching a stream of tournament play, not clips selected for a movie. People are going to make mistakes, fuck up, etc.

What's Observer's Hindsight, BIOTCH

lol sweet double healer hunter is a cool comp

hydra was great to watch, it was like giving speed to a dog and watching it go crazy. i think DGFG and nih were the best teams there. DGFG just seemed a bit inconsistent and nih let themselves down at the end letting cherez die.

Saying they are not perfect doesnt mean they were not good. Grow up

Isaac and Conrad are ballas, spoh too.

What the hell are you talking about? Zyz was FD. He wasn't in neither DGFG nor GGE.

You're sucking zyz's cock too much to see he's terribad.

Anonymous said...

FD won because they successfully ran the most setups. Does this make them the best team? Maybe. I watched the games and if you think they're the best players, I think you're out of your mind.

They sure as hell know how to countercomp though. There wasn't a match that I saw them play in which they didn't have a comp advantage.

Raddy said...

l2read. I said the GGE matches against FD were fun to watch -- I'm well aware that Zyz plays for FD. lol.

People always hate on whoever wins events like this. I picked who I thought would win this thing based on who I thought the BEST players were in WoW. What do you know? I was right. =p

One thing that was annoying was how much how the commentators kept praising Hydra for his "aggressive" play. He knows what he is doing no doubt, but Ely was playing just as, if not better, than Hydra.

The reason why Hydra was so aggressive was because he had a druid healing him. He was the only priest at the tournament that was in a double healer setup. That's how a priest HAS to play when they are in a double healer comp. If anything give props to Ely for being nearly as aggressive as Hydra and still doing a good job keeping up his team solo.

Also can't say enough about Spoh in the last series. He had a bad game or two where he was caught in a fear with no trinket, but outside of those games he did an amazing job of positioning and healing/cc. The first game he was in bear form for almost every fear which was huge in that win.

Spoh is sweet for sure. ^^

I think duelist going for glad would have placed better if this wasnt there first turny togather. they have alot of skill online, but are new with the lan's.

I cant wait to see future games with them and all of the skilled teams.

btw....

The fact that no one was perfect means that the competition was real. It forced the players to operate outside their safe zone and to improvise on the spot. If you can force people into making mistakes that means you are doing things right. The better players just make less of them overall or recover from them faster. The RNG of WoW brings some of this to the table but the longer games do it even more so. Once you can no longer break the game down into "eat the first blind, trinket the 2nd, etc" it becomes more interesting.

I actually enjoyed watching some of that. I was very sad when the RMP lost. Watching Serennia get flattened though, oh man that was gold.

Vontre said...

Also I think not having the S3 glove bonus is what hurt mages a ton in this match.

Raddy said...

Yeah vontre. That definitely hurts.
