I haven't yet spoken with any mage happy with the new WotLK talents. You've got a few very nice buffs to some existing talents -- Prismatic Cloak (meh), Magic Attunement and Absorption. But as for the actual "new" stuff -- yeah you've got three pretty interesting 51pointers, but the other stuff is pretty damn boring. Winter's Grasp is pretty cool. The fire talents seem LOL-terrible and Arcane picks up more PvE single target DPS stuff that doesn't feel particularly arena viable without stupid RNG cheese.
Fire is still plagued by poor design when it comes to arena PvP. A huge chunk of the tree is still talents designed to take advantage of critical strikes which are greatly weakened through resilience; it's frustrating that the new talents are more of the same. The Fiery Payback resist talent is a joke in PvP when you've got 1% chance to resist against most players; sure with Mage Armor and Attunement + MoTW + Shadow Prot, you have some good resists, but that's still almost always going to be just partials. Living bomb is hard to predict really. Is one HoT enough to negate the damage entirely and can you simply ignore it and keep cleaving? Can it be easily purged, dispelled, devoured, or stolen?
Does it look to anyone that anything but frost is going to be generally PvP viable? Especially when you look at some of the ridiculous talents you'll be going up against. The Mage Armor is awesome and I can't wait to swap armors mid-fear-cast or anticipating a psychic scream and swapping off Ice Armor, but inevitably you're still tank/kiting super feral druids, rogues, DKs, warriors, enhancement shamans and hunters and these are the SCARY damage you're up against. Yes we have more ways to freeze shit. But freezes are on DR. The 4 second stun is neat, but it seems more difficult to land than a poly cast. (It's 1.5 second cast -- check again!) I mean obviously you can mid cast pet nova to land it, but that feels like a somewhat clumsy way to use the ability.
And FrostFire bolt? What's the point? A nuke inferior to all the others as it doesn't sound like it will benefit from talents very well at all. (Hello, Arcane Blast)
Obviously we're still very early in alpha and who knows what to expect, but it's not looking overwhelmingly awesome. (Yet!)

damn didnt realize the stun was a 1.5 second cast. i guess all our 51 point talents suck then
Burnout is a real fucking joke lol, i don't see why anyone would every take that talent
but frostfire would be pretty ridiculous without the dot in pvp for a deep frost/fire
snarethatprocsimpactlol
snarethatprocsimpactlol? 3 second cast (no improving talents) subpar snare with subpar damage. It's a confusingly useless talent, and I'm afraid it may be Blizzard's way of saying "sorry for the heavy resist bossfights/levelling environments!" or some shit.
reminder: it's still in alpha
Actually, I suspect you will get "invalid target" if you try casting it in a non frozen target or something, meaning you cant actually freeze right before it goes off.
Should be more like .5 second cast off the gcd or something.
Living bomb seems like it could have awesome potential providing it can't be purged, if it can then it's a fcking joke.
1.5 second cast and the target has to be frozen, screw that. The only 51 point talent that looks decent is arcane barrage...except you've got to sink 50 points in arcane to get there.
21/0/50 seems decent...

you get dragon's breath and pom too.
"reminder: it's still in alpha"
You are correct, sir. But even alpha info tends to be pretty conclusive insight into the core aspects that will make launch. Chances are, most of the talents and abilities we see here will make it into live in relatively similar forms. Maybe a tweak here and there, but yeah. People like to say "it's only alpha" a lot, but anecdotal evidence seems to point to the fact that even alpha is pretty damn solid in a lot of respects.

When you boil down that build, you're choosing Dragon's Breath and Payback over AP/Spell Power. Might be interesting, but I don't think that's an explicitly GOOD decision in any context.
I'd appreciate the UI, it's been a while since we asked.
What I don't get is, when I look at all the other MMO's I've played, WoW is definitely the least fucked up in terms of PvP ... but its still fucked up.
Why do we keep going back to WoW? I don't think its even close to the best representation of player versus player competition is all about.
This looks like BC all over again, they're bringing in pulls and throws and new mechanics and random shit that people won't even use and they haven't even fixed the shit that they brought in two years ago.
--TLDR v.: wtf blizz.
"frostfire bolt.
-> I admit, it seems innocuous at first. However, since we are devoid of information, the mind can only wander and think of the possibilities. This is where I concluded this could not be. Let me elaborate.
Imagine a tri-spec with Spell Power, Ignite and Ice Shards. And [Chaotic Skyfire Diamond] while were at it.
I am not sure if those multiply together. I assume they do.
100 (base damage)
50 (base crit) * 1.25 * 1.50 * 1.03 = 96.5625
196.5625 base crit on frostfire. Then ignite applies, so 40% off that (78.625), giving a total of 275.1875% on frostfire crits.
Hm.
Then you also get frostbite, and shatter. I guess other people see where I'm going with this.

I think the people singing the praises of Atrocity (51 pt Affliction) for Warlocks also missed out on the cast time.
I don't see a 1.5 second cast time pseudo-AoE getting much use in arena.
Warlocks have haunt to go with it though.
have you seen the level 80 mage trainable ability shatter shield? its on the alpha wiki site. could be interesting, may help survivability for non frost builds....before it gets dispelled of course.
I'm kind of psyched about the 51 arcane. A 3sec instant cast sounds pretty awesome to avoid LoS. Mana shield to get a 300dmg buff, trinket for another 200 + AP -> arcane volley -> PoM pyro -> arcane volley -> fireblast -> arcane volley. With a 1.5s GCD, we're looking at a 2k+ instant cast every other spell. Seems nifty enough in theory. If anything, it'll allow us to spam serious damage even when focused.
