Vhairi's Blog and No Rad on PTR

Vhairi's Blog

This deserves a quick reference. I won't editorialize too much. I actually think that there is more opportunity to do well in 2v2 as a mage currently than players seem to accomplish, but it is almost more of a gameplay frustration issue than a balance issue that keeps mages discouraged and out of higher ratings. Likewise for hunters. I agree with the opinion that 2.3 will probably balance-wise be poor for the class in the smaller arenas as the buffs to other classes and the nerf to hypothermia offset anything the class is getting to aid it in the smaller brackets.

People have been pressuring me to get on PTR and put together another dueling video. I'm not really sure it's something I want to do right now, but 2.3 is promised to be on Test for a long time, so perhaps I'll have a change of heart. Ming does plan to do a lot on this PTR so hopefully he'll provide plenty of entertainment for everyone. ^^ (Besides, Affix and Hiyather can represent)

i think its how we have to pair with another dps to take advantage of our class's strengths. both the outlasting side and the burst. i like playing 2s with another dps preferably rogue but healing teams will always win more consistantly. with all the survivability the arena seems to be focused around. i'll try and climb up it alittle next patch with my old partner who got up to 2100 with when everyone was trying to make cgs, not that it matters being canadian. mage frostbolt coefficient change i think was a great addition to 2v2 play but it was most likely put in because of the unexspected synergy with missiles and the mystical gem. not to mention the rogue buff and warlocks being nerfed for smaller brackets. i know we lost alot to healer locks. i mean warlock paladin is just no fun at all we hardly could scratch those stupid teams.

the big problem with mages in 2s is warlocks

a mage/rogue or mage/spriest team could do wonders if they didn't come up against a warlock/healer team every other game

Does it give you any logs to work with (in the WoWTest/Logs/ folder)? Might be better off re-installing it though, since it's only 150MB or thereabouts.

I agree with eks et al, lock+healer is the biggest reason Mages don't do better in 2v2.

Without that combo it would be a different scenario altogether and that is why stats only ever show part of the story.

Radikal is scared to go on PTR because he knows that he will get his ass kicked by everyone and get humiliated. Mages are worthless. Reroll lock asap.

I think the first issue with mages is how difficult it is to find a partner of proper class. I find priest working alright because the priest is threatening enough with mana burn to keep dps pressure off of me, which allows me to burst. We even beat some warlock teams the other day, I was surprised.

The big problem is that mages are the worst class to play outlast. That doesn't mean we can't do it ever, it just means we aren't as equipped as classes that have a pet to keep people out of drink, or don't use mana. And we're timer based, if you don't have a water elemental up it's pretty much impossible to kill another player (if they have a healer).

Now this isn't a problem on its own, not every team is built on outlast, however mage burst is the easiest burst dps to counter because of line of sight. I like going against melee teams because if my partner is on the ball we can pull them away from pillars where they'll take the full force of my dps. All it takes to completely shut down my dps is some pillar circling. If arenas were just flat open fields you would see more mages, probably more hunters too.

So true.

But why should a priest go with a mage if he can go with a warlock who can life tap/mana drain and can keep other players in combat with a pet?

Yep. They always say the grass is greener on the other side, so I checked it out. What can I say? The grass is FUCKING GREEN on the warlock side.
