Poker Noir

Imagine you're sitting 20-40 at the Taj. The spacious and normally busy poker room has become subdued as morning draws near and players fight the battle to stay alert. The too-ugly-for-Vegas waitresses are serving up coffees and espressos instead of beers and scotches. Their trays are so covered with dollar bills and chips that you feel slightly ridiculous tipping them at this point. Diet Red Bull? Sorry only regular. Useless cunt. Why does this place even try with the girls when the best they can offer is more over-the-hill Hooters than hot?

Whatever, you're just pissed. It took two hours to get a seat. They tried to sit you when you arrived at a table more busted than these girl's faces. No thanks, you don't enjoy paying the rake while trading even money with your friends. You saw the table you wanted. State school memorabilia and sports jerseys everywhere. College kids and geezers. Mostly white. Fantastic.

Four and five men to the flop every hand, mostly calling stations. The young guys are more focused on shuffling their chips than watching their opponents. Everyone checks their cards way early in the rotation -- nobody is looking to get any pre-flop information. Congratulations, they've read a book on poker. They know what top 20 hands are and have memorized how to play certain hands in certain positions. Cool. Too bad they're more focused on rolling chips around their hand and sweet talking the girls old enough to be their mothers. You love these guys.

It's supposed to be a tough game, the Taj 20-40, but you're killing it. Quadrupled your stack in a few hours. Maybe you've found the softest table, it hasn't been the cards. You haven't slept in three days solid. Your breath stinks strongly of Red Bull, you can smell it on your own breath. Whatever it takes, right? You'd kill for a Provigil right now. Literally kill. Okay, maybe just hurt, but fuck it, sleep or something like it sounds fantastic. Not talking women here either, just fucking sleep.

You're in character. Obnoxious and cocky. Maybe a little preppy. No accent bullshit though, the guys with fake accents are the most gigantic douchebags of poker. You've played this character on the tables for more than 6 years now, he might as well be you. If he wasn't when you started, he is a little bit now. Has it been worth it? It comes back to the money, the fucking money. Where is it now? Spent on things you don't talk about, can't talk about, not with your friends even. Can't exactly buy a car or condo with your poker winnings without reporting to the IRS anyways. It's gone as quickly as it came. Fuck that nonsense, get in character.

You're 5D-6D early to act and decide to straight call despite the extremely loose, aggressive player on your left just to get yourself into a goddamn hand. Thirty minutes of folding mid-weak junk because you know the cannon next to you is raising everything pre-flop. He re-raises and 4 players call 2 bets into the flop. Flop comes K-K-8 rainbow, what's the play?

Most players check here and look to fight another day where they have more to work with -- bluffing into the wild player on the left is not wise unless you have fantastic table image established and your bets represent some real strength. Besides, loose players DO have it sometimes, and bluffing into wild men who catch a good hand is how to waste a lot of money. However, my playstyle is to win hands on 3rd, I bet. Loose player re-raises, players 3 and 4 fold.

Why did I bet? Or what am I betting? I'm betting the King. I came in early pre-flop so KQ and KJ are definitely hands I could be put on. The table is communal enough to play any A-X suited bullshit, and I've been seen playing these hands which is a problem. The beauty and simplicity to playing straight bluffs instead of semi-bluffs is you get to focus exclusively on selling your hand without obsessing too much over what your opponents are holding. I quickly re-raise. There are 10 bets in the pot, I'll take 10 to 1 odds on selling the King. Worst case is our table wild man holds the King and I get the fuck out the way on fourth.

I expect him to quickly call. He pauses. He looks at me. I grin. He grins back. He thinks for a minute while chatting me up. "You should learn to slow play these hands," he informs me. He turns over two red aces and folds. I flip over the 5-6 nothing to the table, he curses, I grin. I collect the chips, tip the dealer, and get up.

It wasn't a big hand. It wasn't the money. The play was nice but it wasn't anything fancy. But it was satisfying. It was personal. WoW once felt this way before cross realm battlegrounds, before trashtalking arena teams you've never faced on separate battlegroups. I want that back.

I must say, that is probably the best blog entries I've seen. On top of that, it is 100% right as far as how I feel about current WoW

Well played =p

@ anon on top of me.

Current WoW is where the waitress at your table goes "are that many aces good or bad?" out loud when you check your hand, and you collect diddly on what you could have slow-rolled.

Where every time you win, there's a hidden infraction, and every time you lose, they cut little peices of skin off of you and paste them onto a doll that sits in the middle of the table.

By the time the game is over, the doll is a quilt of human skin, glaring it you.

100% agree

Love poker, love the analogy, love the purpose.

I will tell you the people I remember most in this game and those were the people I pvped AGAINST and WITH outside BRM and in WPL/EPL not the countless faces in Arena and cross realm BG.

Funny, well written, great.

Having seen you play both WoW and poker, it is quite obvious you are wasting your time with WoW. =p

Judging by the fact that this epic post made no mention of "speedy" I'm gonna go out on a limb and guess you didn't follow my prior advice.

I dont know much about poker but this post is truly very "noir"

Someone has been reading some Richard K Morgan.

I honestly really miss the same server battlegrounds as well. Sure, it sucked to wait ten or fifteen minutes to fight sometimes, but hey, they were damn good fights with people you could identify with. People you could probably talk to afterwards and be all like,"Word. That was a good fight. Blah blah blah." Good times. Now, it is faceless, and getting steamrolled by a premade from a server, where you will never play with those people, sucks some royal ass.

Great post.

Nice with a post about poker for a change ;)

Good post. Bgs are nothing more than honor farming these days. I remember my climb to HWL before xrealms was actually FUN b/c it was vs players that became infamously good bad or cheap. All this anonymity with other servers makes it impersonal. Enough QQ'ing

Clearly you have some not bad writing skills and good creativity.

Do not waste them just writing "funny" bullshit to amuse your fanboys.

Raddy...

Are you going to chime in on the mage changes? I crushed on your 0/38/23 spec and have been having a lot of fun, but it seems with all the new changes Frost is just getting even more buffs.

The Frost build is the only build that really allows for an improved casting time in frostbolt, Fire really doesn't. Ice Barrier nerf for low end gear, probably a slight buff for full gladiator gear. Detect Magic removed, making Winter's Chill a much more reliable Poly protector than Imp Scorch. And for 17/0/44 builds you get a little mana boost (mostly PvE) in the Arcane Meditation change.

So is this the real death of fire for PvP?

WTB update on mage changes or a bit more explanation on what above post mentioned

I'm more then depressed... I work a 40 hour work week and do classes which leaves me with little time to read forums (they are blocked at work) which leaves me to blogs for the latest on PvP and such. First ming started talking about his real life and his site went to crap and now this. I have come here looking to read about the new patch or the leaked 2.3 patch notes. Exciting things about how they will affect arena and new strats for different line ups. But no. You and ming both build followings on good comprehensive PvP discussion that was quality reading and have turned into crap that drags readers along waiting for anything of substance to come out again. I have scanned the past few articles and not seen much... Today's scan all I see is poker and vegas crap. Can you PLEASE talk about PvP goto MMOchampion and give opinions on new mage talents. Not that i care much because I mainly play holy priest and as of late switched to warrior. But reading your ideas on mage class helps me think how to counter it and such. You can't be good at a class if you don't know all the others.

"oppo all you do is bitch and moan, quit already"

Who are you?

As for my comment in this thread- current WoW pvp, even the uuber-competitive tourny version, is pretty much a joke.

DQs, maps that give provide large advantages / disadvantages to certain classes, constant balance second-guessing on blizzard's part that plants not seeds, but entire orchards of doubt in the minds of players on whether or not they know what they are doing (Prime example: From last patch, to this patch, to 2.3, evocation will have undergone a major change each patch, in different directions...this patch it apparently scales even worse, due to a value bug, and next patch it's by %s.)

Bottom line: I bitch and moan because they are slowly killing many aspects of WoW that I found enjoyable (RIP shadow reflector), and you are whining about me whining.

who am i? who are you?

yea i am whining about you whining. the difference is you do it every single day.

If you think I whine every single day, then you've been watching me too closely (or you read my blog, which still qualifies as watching me too closely)

I, you see, am an E-thug.
You are nothing more than the spawn of some trog I had a thing for, once, for a few days.
Don't make me write something in my blog about you, bitch.

Anonymous said...

Oppo, youre one of those people where it's hard to tell if you're serious or if you're kidding, however, the best thing about you is that you're fucking hysterical either way, just for very different reasons.

Anonymous said...

i cant view armory at work.

and no i didnt know you have a blog. i read this blog at work and useually see you complaining. posting about your complaints here have no chance of getting anything changed.

Unknown said...

If every complaint about WoW actually went through, the servers would explode.

However, i've bitched my fair share and been temp-banned from the forums for trolling warlocks after a particularly gruesome 2v2, and warlocks are getting a nerf in 2.3

Not really a "nerf" as much as absolutely no buff, and their anti-classes are getting more ammunition against them (MS improvement effects locks directly, fleet foot increase helps further negate amp. Coex)

Whined about mages not getting food/water well, and we get ritual of refreshement (lame name but i'm just so happy to not spend half an hour conjuring that shit that i'll take what i can get)

Whined about scaling, and they are removing the dmg tax, and promising a non-spirit reliant fix to evocate.

Many of these issues have been DIRECTLY stated by blizzard as WAI, pre-change announcements.

It was only the epic QQ that forced them to realize something was wrong.

If anything, it reinforces my conviction that certain segments of the WoW community whine and bitch enough, we WILL get what we want.

And I'll be damned if you, or anyone else, is gonna stop us from whining our way to the top of the pvp ladder!

Ayrll said...

sadly the evocation change dosent seem like much of a change at all. i guess it will save me having to hit my spirit staff button but i checked last night and i get like 55% mana now. with the new evo it will be 60% mana i think?

what is your blog opportunistic?

Well, obviously you're not going to find attractive waitresses at the Taj. Go to the Borgata already, most of them actually could work in Vegas...

Anonymous said...

These posts are so full of win.

Unknown said...

I get around 30% evocation, maybe 40 if it lasts till the last tick.
(0 spirit ftw, no desire to purchase and enchant a "spirit" staff and get a wand for milking out a pittance more)

radikal said...

Jag, I know very little about AC scene. I went there just because my friends were there playing. Does Borgata deal the same limits even? I heard Borgata was mostly no limit 2/4 garbage.

I don't ever play cards on east coast really. o.O

Girls at Taj were ugly as fuck. Then again, the waitresses at Bellagio aren't really anything special. Caesar's girls on the other hand are ridiculous, but you're stuck playing blackjack with autoshufflers if you want the view.

Love your shit rad

Oh btw, I actually do write up posts on WoW topics every once in a while, I just don't have the stomach to post them as they're terribly boring. ^^

Interesting post.

Every now and then people want the boring strat post, especially with 2.3 changes being tossed around.

I'm sure you can make it at least somewhat interesting as you have a decent writing style at least.

Anonymous said...

Those "boring" posts are interesting if not necessarily entertaining. Interesting is legit though. I'd say this post even falls more under the interesting category, it's a very strange turn for a WoW blog, but definitely a creative idea.

Unknown said...

Rad, by all means, bore us.

Pics of the girls or it didn't happen.

you know the pics i want.

Te only problem with this post was that you didnt mention dick/cock/meat spinning at all.

dont listen to the haters, dont post about 2.2/2.3 strats - your real fans (stalkers) want homoerotic dejection. everytime you iceblock ill be there to build a campfire and hold you until your warm. god radikal, i love you, and not just because i got your name tattoo'd on my ass so now i feel i have to be committed but because the way you write makes the world (of warcraft)inspirational again. i want to be you, and if that means cutting your skin off and wearing it, then dressing up like a girl - fine.

Randy -

Raddy's blog is in fact made from a pure mixture of "gold" and "win" while your post was made from imprecise ammounts of "qq" and jealousy. Now im not a real doctor even though i played one on TV, nor am i a real G.I. Joe even though i have the poo-stained underwear and unbrushed teeth and one of those plug in electronic tanks. but i do know whats making you feel nauseous(sp) is the aformentoined jealousy. Knowledge is half the battle - the other half is making terrorist iraqis fuck each other while handcuffed and blind folded.

thank you for your time,

Taj is going to have more poker games than any other casino in AC, that's a given, but the Borgata is up there. If you go on a peak night they'll have lots of games in every limit, plus it's a shitload classier...basically the only cardroom actually worth visiting in A.C, imo. =p

I've only been to Vegas a few times, but have you seen the Luxor girls? Damn...

P.S. This was a really sweet entry, the last paragraph nailed it. =D

radikal said...

I don't remember the Luxor girls =(

I used to play in vegas every other weekend or so, but WoW took over that obsession pretty hardcore and with online a pain to play in the US, I haven't played much in the past 18 months. If I ever disappear from WoW, I'm either dead or playing poker. ^^

Eh, I guess bet/re-raise on the flop works. I would have gone for the check-call flop / check-raise 4th.

ignore the people that dont appreciate the posts about poker.

i also play wow and have been playing poker for 4 years so when some guy in trade channel named loldonakaments was lf mech group..i laughed.

in any case, your poker post was a bit bs/cheezy but i know what you mean.
i hate how you played the hand - it does make for a good story but three handed betting into a lag and a donk. there is no way he folded aces there given the image that you assigned.
you really think he doesnt call down?

Anonymous said...

also, we should organize a trip to AC
i am up for going whenever.

borg is the cleanest and niciest to play, the rest of the casinoes are garbage.

trop closed down - i run like absolute crap in trop so I barely play there but the 2/5 games at the trop at the juciest imo.
on fridays and saturdays they spread 5/10 when a mega fish comes. the lineup is very tough - think good 2p2ers, but the fish makes it worth your while.

taj is dirty imo so i dont like playing there period. shuffling their chips makes and sitting in that forgotten dump puts me on auto tilt.

so for 1/2 go to borg, for 2/5 go to trop if you can handle it (less college kids/tight abc players and more donks), other borg. 5/10 at the trop.
