Thoughts on Things

Oh, hi there.

I haven't been too forthcoming with Arena brainstorming because I'm still REALLY far behind the curve on gearing up and being ready for the season. Prepping for the season really depends on what your situation is -- do you PvE? Are you wiling to? Do you have a guild to carry you? What comps will you run? THE QUESTIONS JUST DON'T STOP.

By the way, did you know that in Scotland it is illegal to be drunk while in possession of a cow?

You just learned something new if not. Congratulations. +1 xp of smartness for you.

Capping honor is obvious for season prep.Depending on your luck with BGs, I think 3-4k honor is pretty feasible in wotlk grinding Strand. After that, grinding marks is next, but from what I've seen, the other BGs are rarely up yet. Strand is reasonably addictive and new, but I can't imagine the fascination lasting. I still like AB the best of the BGs. I really don't like the vehicles in WG or Strand -- world of tribes is pretty wtf. Some people claim WG is huge honor but I haven't really found that to be the case. I can claim bullshit stuff too. It doesn't make it true.

I can tell the difference between hooker blood and normal blood purely based upon texture.

PvPing with zero resilience, 12k hp, and less than 1k spell damage is pretty amusing. Being on the receiving end of 9.4k ambushes or 8k eviscerates while not being able to out dps HoTs even with AP up as Arcane is fun. Realistically, I should have 4k more hp, 500 more dmg, and at least a few hundred resilience with real gear, so I'm not terribly concerned. I'm a little more cynical with how Arcane will fair against melee especially due to the extreme rapidity that the spec tears through mana, but then again, the damage is pretty amazing and instant invis is INCREDIBLE.

Pretty much every nonbad player I know is leaning towards 20/0/51 for Arena and I don't deny that it might be the most rounded and highest potential spec longer term. The prevailing logic is that Arcane's 3.0 dominance was simply a product of smaller health pools and that it lacks the burst to drop high HP targets with similar speed. I'm sort of undecided on whether I believe this or not.

Swapping to and fro between Arcane and Frost puts one in a bit of gear bind however. I'm really of the opinion that Haste is generally worthless for Arcane. (OTHERS WILL STRONGLY DISAGREE BUT I'M MORE EFAMOUS AND THEREFORE MORE CORRECT. FUCK YOU HAAB.) I mean ideally I like to hop around like a fairy, pretend I can twirl like a belf, and fire off Barrages every 3 sec until I can look for an opportunity to blow some CDs and skill someone to death with AP burst stupidity. In between Barrages, it's basically either reapplying slow, fireblasting, reapplying a ward/shield, or tossing a lance or scorch, primarily for the imp scorch dispel fodder. With haste you just end up performing a marginal action because you're waiting on the 3s cooldown, and you probably decrease your damage output as you are spending less time Barraging. Arcane also gets very little benefit from Crit, although with Fire as your support tree, it's not awful. Spell damage and resilience definitely seem like primary stats.

Frost on the other hand demands haste, perhaps not to the point of making huge sacrifices to damage, but I can imagine such a setup not being terribad. It's really about maximizing damage during DFs, which haste helps tremendously, and being able to get off casts for Shatter Combos, which is increasingly difficult with the buffs to spell interrupts. Frost is also WAY more mana efficient so the downside of Haste, that is, casting more and thus spending more mana, is less an issue.

A compromise is basically to roll engineering and gear mostly for an Arcane spec. You still can IV + RG (rocket glove) for quick polys or double frostbolt shatter combos during DFs.

Speaking of quick polys, what is going to be the anti spell reflect juke now with it not being on global? I've been still lancing as an Arcane mage, but my homie/gaylover Haab points out that you can fake cast into Slow, if he reflects, it is INSTANT (no travel time waiting) and you can simply reslow him, which removes it from yourself, and then poly. This basically wastes .75 for the fake, then two globals, BEFORE, you start the real poly cast, but compare it to .75, 2.5 for the lance global plus travel time and consider that even if you can't get the poly you've still got some good distance with the Slow, and it sort of makes sense. I don't much like the idea of basically intentionally putting Slow on yourself and counting on the fact you can apply it off yourself personally.

For some perspective on what we'll look like in top gear, consider this setup:

Body + One Ring: 9/9 Deadly
Titanium Spellshock Ring
Sundial of the Exiled
The Turning Tide
Deadly Glad OH
Deadly ToD
Assuming Engi Boots + Gloves (Missing run speed!) and obviously some hard to get PvE stuff (but tbh the PvP equivs aren't much worse)

20033 hp
15813 mp
24.26 % crit
4.04% hit
2% haste
2061 dmg (BASE)
766 resil (A bit low)

Even mages with 20k hp?

The lie isn't that he can't tell the difference between hooker blood and normal blood. That's true. The lie is that he wants you to believe he can't.

Are you running with fire or frost as support for arc? I'd guess fire from your scorch debuff comments?

I've been struggling with levelling (lol78) but have been wondering if frost support might work better, mostly for shatter funtimes lance>barrage type stuff.

Raddy said...

undecided still zarth

tried both a little, leaning towards fire, but arena is very diff from BGs sometimes lol

N said...

For some reason I want fire to be better but I can't imagine it being too successful without blazing speed to compensate for my poor kiting skills...

Mente said...

I think mana overall will be our biggest downfall, btw what do you think of the 37/34 arc frost build I posted earlier.

Still debating on the engi glove enchants... 8 seconds.. 2 min cd.. iono

N said...

Oh, and slow v icelance I think slow is a cooler way of doing it but 24% base mana versus 7% is pretty convincing in favor of ice lance.

It's kinda nice to have a strong visual confirmation that you've got rid of the reflect in case teammates are watching as well.

Frost will be as strong in WOTLK early arena as it was in BC early arena.

Then it will become weak as hell as defensive stats and gemming become the rage, and then strong as hell near endgame wotlk when offensive gemming and speccing take over once more with increased offensive item scaling.

RADDY

opinions on 2/48/21 or 2/51/18? (living bomb is homo I know), and maybe destro lock/fire mage 2s?

Oppo said...

Niiva you can't chaos bolt through divine anymore, they nerfed it when they saw that locks actually specced INTO destro for pvp.

Anonymous said...

Whats the point of chaos bolt then??

What about glyph ?
Sheep/evoc (obviously) and remove curse ?

kzn - F U

Actually, I had been meaning to try Arc/Frost with armor talents but my gear is so penis that until I have some pvp cloth with real armor on it, I haven't bothered.

I couldn't find a spec I liked though except maybe 57/2/11 with 0/5 frostbolt and 2/2 imp frost ward. I can see the potential for a spec like this but it really requires a priest as a healer perhaps even more than the fire variety. However, it is only about 1500 armor more at most than a typical spec. (Can we start enchanting armor to cloak instead of 23 haste? LOL) If you could get to 30% mitigation buffed, I can totally see it, but that seems only possible in 5s with stupid buffs.

Raddy said...

Also, a brief sidepoint on why stupid offensive pve gear shit works so well:

If you increase the variance of your performance and selectively queue, you will be higher rated.

That is to say that high damage burst setups that can randomly crit for a billion and beat top teams work very well as long as you avoid low rated counters. (This is why bads like me and ming could run fire mage + rogue to 2300 even before fire mages were made less awful) It's why 2dps teams are basically rating inflated in 2s imo or why pve gear translates to such high ratings. As long as you can occasionally trade with the highest rated teams, GREAT SUCCESS in ratings. (I'm not saying that therefore you should run 2dps or run with retarded all pve +dmg gear -- I'm just saying that there's some effectiveness to it...)

Oppo said...

Deleted and reposted for clarity:

Raddy, i'd say the same is true for some of that ridiculous turtle pve gear that you get from raiding.

(Like any motherfucking lock out there went 'OH SHIT SON, I'M RAIDING SWP TONIGHT, GOTTA BREAK OUT THAT VOIDSTAR, PVEEEEE BOIIIIYYYYYA)

Anonymous said...

Well, you are wrong about frost imo. Frostbolt\FrostFire bolt scales so poorly with spd its just no comments. With top pvp gear it looks like 25k warrior (or 30k..whatever) and you are hitting him for 3.3k hits\5.5-6k crits...with LoS(hello 2.5k sec cast time) and all that shit (like HoTs) its no way. Only 1 viable specc - arcane + fire (because scorch debuff + stun + pyro wtf own frost, even vs melee). Shitloads of dmg every 2 mins + slow ftw.
Build-something like this http://www.wowhead.com/?talent=of0ifzrcdcGzGt0dfVbcou (and don't ask what for focus magic in this build).

Mente said...

that spec is horrible mainly cause you speced for burning determination.

i toyed around abit with some kind of 34/37/0 spec http://www.wowhead.com/?talent=oberczr0dcGzZfV0fRG0uizM
(not really decided in A. forti vs clearcasting and would like to squeeze out some points for pyromaniac)

Its not competitive at all, but hell of a lot fun to play.
i simply cant stand playing barrage spam, with this it feels almost back to lvl 60, with such nice toys as instant invis and Blazing.
The spellpower change to the upper tiers hurts tho :(

Hektic said...

I've been planning on 60/0/11, taking icy veins almost entirely for the glyphed snare\slow removal. Speccing into fire seemed fairly overkill and pyro not being affected by TtW is a turn-off.

Poly glyph is shit and your team is bad if you need that

Kolenzo said...

^ Or it's a team that does target swaps and has dots (like anything with a warrior...)

Raddy said...

poly glyph makes swd not work so um, it is basically mandatory

This is what I want to know. Why is there one and only ONE caster dps trinket that is on-use (such as Icon of the Silver Crescent). Not only that, why is it a DROP and not a badge reward. Also, why is it blue and not epic? Come on Blizzard, our BEST on-use trinket is blue and a random drop from heroic VH. Exactly why do casters get boned while melees get an epic one? (Loatheb's Shadow). gg blizz

Anonymous said...

Robots + pvp = no longer pvp

Fuck the tanks and the turrets in strand/WG

kzn said...

Best on-use trinket for a deep frost mage is actually Mark of Norgannon from Malygos 25man, but good luck convincing your raid that you should get it over an expertise using class.

It is pretty retarded.

kzn said...

On a side note, I dont know how to go about figuring this out, so I'll just ask you raddy:

Assuming a 57/2/12 spec, am I still best off using Fireball in the HOLY JESUS BUTTONS macro or should I be looking at frostfire bolt? Obviously ABlast is an option as well if you want to cut travel time out of the equation completely (which, frankly, is not a bad idea).

Raddy said...

I'm sort of leaning towards frostfire bolt kzn. Has also the advantage that it ignores wards and resist auras. (Plus retarded huge crits)

I want this to not suck. Crit with a scorch, nova -> fireblast -> pyro? Nova -> scorch -> fireblast -> pyro? Then, with the Pyroblast in mid-air, you light up the Combustion cooldown to get them crit stacks rolling. You roll up on their nuts with 2 stacks of Combustion and lay the Dragon's Breath on them, do a backflip, and line up the Fireball -> Scorch -> Pyroblast for the kill. I feel like I just wrote some Warcraft erotica this shit is so sexy.

This spec is the imported beer of Mage specs. My God, that full body flavor is alluring, but the ten-dollar-per-sixer price tag and 300 calories/bottle is simply ridiculous when all you want to do is slam some brew and get hammered. Horribly mana inefficient, multiple-cast reliant, RNG dependent; but when it all lines up for that special moment, it's as vindicating as pulling your dick out of Scarlett Johanssen's vagina.

Maybe even moreso.

I'm going to be coming at the mania story from a very different angle I think

Dunn said...

Yo Raddy one thing you forgot to mention was that the two piece bonus from the pve set is pretty darn good specially for arcane. Like not so much the extra spell power you get from popping a mana gem, but the 40% more mana. That's like ~1300 more mana every time you pop a gem.

I'm personally getting Valorous Frostfire shoulders (the Glad ones look like crap) and perhaps legs.

Thanks for the tip Dahis! Looks like mages are going to be one hell of a skill-class this coming season. Iceblock, instant invis, mirror image & blink tricks and so forth. Good times!

As for specs, 51/0/20 with RG+IV is, at least with bad gear, superior to 51/20/0 imo. The damage you can pump out with IV+RG is quite awesome even with 0 base haste.

Anonymous said...

yes i love how much better the faggot pve TWO PIECE bonus is than the mana gem major glyph.

Hey raddy, just wondering if you knew any other places to aoe from 70-77 until you can do this place?

And you can do this place at 77 right?

And what's your spec.

Blowjob?
